Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), global leader in music rights management, has extended the application deadline for The BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Librettists Workshop to Friday, June 8th. This prestigious program works to enhance and develop skills in musical theatre bookwriting. All workshop fees, including applications, are FREE for participants. Must be 18 years or older, while BMI membership is encouraged, it is not required.
This workshop runs from mid-September 2018 through June 2019 and meets weekly at BMI’s headquarters in downtown New York City. Nearly 60 years ago, renowned musical theatre composer Lehman Engel joined with BMI to form a musical theatre program for aspiring Broadway composers and lyricists, known today as the esteemed BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. The Librettist program was born shortly after, expanding the workshop and creating a space for bookwriters. Spearheaded by Broadway veteran Nancy Golladay, the program has a long history of supporting musical bookwriters and helping them to develop their craft and kickstart their careers.
Next season, for the first time in the history of the program, the workshop will expand with the addition of a new class, Musical Theatre Bookwriting Basics. This class will meet once a week and serve as an introduction course, teaching the foundation of musical theatre book writing. Moving forward, the original Librettist Workshop format, a roundtable critique program for writers with professional theatre experience, will act as a more advanced course for participants who have also completed the Bookwriting Basics course. The requirements and more in-depth details and information for each course can be found on BMI’s website.
