"Suenos de una Noche de Verano (Midsummer Night's Dream)"
By William Shakespeare

What silliness, what tom-foolery, what nonsense, what irreverence,
what ridiculousness, what costumes, what fun. Teatro Teba returns
to the Fringe with "Suenos de una Noche de Verano (Midsummer Night's
Dream)," another Spanish Language adaptation of a classic, after last
year's impressive "Los Siete Contra Thebes (Seven against Thebes)."
The production starts with Spanish Telenovela music, and a fashion
parade of the main characters, all in drag. You have to see these
costumes to believe them. Flamboyant, big, colorful, these words don't
quite approach these costumes, but they are great.
The show is acted in drop dead Telenovela style, with earnest faces,
amazing exits, and no holds barred over-emoting, but even if you don't
understand Spanish, the play works, partly because the actors commit
so well, partly because Puck (played by Harold Garcia) truly drives
the action, partly because director Rivera is able to be faithful
to the spirit of the text while cutting it down to an hour and fifteen
minute Fringe version, and allowing the actors a chance to have fun.
So, we have fun as well.
