"Clowning The Bible"
Six Figures Theatre Company
At the Henry Street Settlement Recital Hall

Strangely enough, Six Figures Theater Company's "Clowning the Bible" is at its best when there isn't any clowning.

Don't get me wrong, there are absolutely hilarious moments in this book-by-book of the Bible, such as the quite innovative parting of the Red Sea, or the use of Ricky Martin's "La Vida Loca" as Sodom and Gomorrah's theme song (which alone is worth the price of a ticket). Too often, however, the joke that is comical for twenty seconds fades into an eternity of a three-minute sketch. The shorter vignettes fare well because they punch their line and then clear the stage.

The main event - the life and death of Jesus - is easily the high point of the play, yet not a single joke is made. Set to stirring music and treated with extreme reverence, it's enough to make you wonder why the actors are still wearing clown noses.
