"All-Male Lives of Y2 Gay"
The Musical Wild at Last Theatre Company
At the Henry Street Settlement Recital Hall
Reviewed by Lisa Sandberg for Theatre Reviews Limited
This
performance is a one-hour adaptation of a full-length musical revue.
The "book" of "All Male Lives of Y2-Gay" was developed by Jeff Dobbins,
Hugh Hysell, and the acting company during writing workshops. This
musical review examines what it takes to be a gay man at the turn
of the Millennium. This is a musical exploration of the confusing
and poignant lives of gay men. While it is portrayed in a highly personal
and sentimental manner, it is quite often extremely funny as well.
With songs such as "The Misfit's Lament" and "Coming Out" to "Family
Values" and "Mr. Right," a full range of emotions and situations are
explored by the actors in song form. The eight-man show tells the
tale of men searching for acceptance, love, community, and friendship
in the new era.
The actors show great enthusiasm and charm during their various pieces
and seem to greatly enjoy both performing and watching the show. This
enthusiasm certainly translates to the audience, and a great time
is had by all. While the only prop and costume is a long, sheer white
cloth, the actors cleverly manage to use it in a multitude of ways.
